Association leaders gathered in Newburgh for their annual Leadership Weekend April 29-May 1, and the theme this year was Service, Leadership & Legacy. As leaders of the organization, participants at this event have committed their profession to serving their districts, taken leadership roles within their local Chapter, and now are carrying out the legacy of their predecessors.
"As part of our theme and agenda for the event, we invited a number of past leaders of the organization to share their experience with our current leaders," said Chris Ouderkirk, CDF, SBGA President (Sandy Creek CSD). "It was my pleasure and honor to welcome our special guests to this year's Leadership Weekend. The group of distinguished men helped shape our organization, and make it what it is today."

Earlier this month SBGA completed another successful Advocacy Day! We had nearly 60 members travel to Albany for this event and truly appreciate everyone's participation, which allowed us to present one unified voice to the New York State Legislature. Thank you to Jim Carr, Heather Evans and Sara Van Son of Hinamn Straub for setting up over 100 appointments and drop offs as well as preparing all of the legislative packets.

SBGA/SFMI leaders gathered in Alexandria Bay for their annual Leadership Weekend April 30-May 2, and the theme this year was Growing a Strong Organization from the Ground Up. "This weekend is our opportunity to focus on growing our Chapters and sustaining a strong state-wide organization," commented Joe Hammond, CDF, SBGA President (Liverpool CSD).
Nurturing the resources available to us is critical to sustaining a strong, successful organization. SBGA Officers, State Directors, Chapter Presidents and SFMI Board Members spent the weekend discussing everything from Chapter team building to strategies for energizing members at all levels of the Association.

2009 Advocacy Day A Huge Success
We're pleased to announce we had nearly 100% Chapter participation for this year's event, with 55 school facilities professionals traveling to the Capital Monday, March 16.
This year's key issues were:
Legislative Priorities • Support Directors of Facilities • Support Energy Reserve Fund
Budgetary Priorities • Support Governor's Repeal of Wicks Law • Support the Re-Establishment of a dedicated Maintenance Aid
Many thanks to all participants; your continued support of the Association and school facilities professional continues to be invaluable. We also thank Jim Carr, Heather Evans and Brittany Vogel of Hinman Straub for all of their efforts in scheduling legislative appointments, assembling event materials and preparing the group for the day. |
