Nearly 300 Superintendents of School Buildings and Grounds (SBGA) from across the state gathered in Saratoga Springs from October 4-7 for a school facilities management professional development conference.

"With the current economy, and the challenges school districts are facing, it's more important than ever that the state's school facilities managers gather and share information about our profession," said SBGA President, Chris Ouderkirk, CDF, Superintendent of Buildings & Grounds, Sandy Creek CSD.

"By attending this event, school facilities professionals throughout New York State are now better prepared to manage this economic crisis and brought cost-saving measures back to their local district," stated Ouderkirk.

One critical component of this year's conference included a School Facilities Management Symposium. During this interactive general session, conference attendees discussed the key financial issues they face on a daily basis, including controlling energy consumption, surviving budget cuts, navigating escalating construction costs, and more. Carl Thurnau, PE and Chuck Szuberla from the New York State Education Department and Matt Brown from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) joined participants in developing cost-saving ideas and implementation strategies for districts statewide.

"We're problem solvers, and by getting so many of us from around the state in one room we were able to share our similar concerns and offer each other creative solutions for the road blocks we face every day," commented Ouderkirk.

Other workshops addressed topics such as how to do more with less while choosing safe and healthy environmentally preferable cleaning products and reducing energy costs by retrofitting your building's lighting system. Representatives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Department of Health, the Office of General Services and the State Comptroller's office also provided the latest information pertaining to the efficient, safe, healthy operations of New York State's schools.

"We continue to emphasize professional development and the important role we play in providing a safe and healthy learning environment for the state's public schools," Ouderkirk added.
