2009 Summit

A HUGE SUCCESS!

On March 26, 2009, SFMI in partnership with New York State Education Department (NYSED) and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) held its first Critical Issues One-Day Training Summit in historic Chancellors Hall located in the NYS Education Building, Albany, NY.

Nearly 200 school facilities directors, school business officials, superintendents and architects and engineers gathered to hear Commissioner Richard P. Mills address the importance of professional development and how necessary it is to continue attendance to programs such as the SFMI Summit to stay current in all areas that affect the successful daily management of school facilities. Joe Hammond, CDF, SBGA President, (Liverpool CSD), was honored to present a plaque and sentiments shared by all in attendance, thanking Commissioner Mills for his steadfast support of the school facilities profession and recognition of his dedication and leadership in the education of the children of our State and his support of the school facilities where they learn.

The tools attendees left with include information on the federal stimulus package and how it will affect schools, budget and regulatory issues, how to manage and plan for projects, from Carl Thurnau, PE, Coordinator and Charles Szuberla, Director of NYSED Office of Facilities Planning, properly maintaining current staffing levels, from Stan Polmateer, SFMI-Co-Chairman, Rush-Henrietta CSD, and energy savings strategies for now and for five year plan, from Donald Fudge,

TRC Energy Solutions. We heard a personal story from John Songer, PEC of Rochester City School Districts and how he has become one of the top Energy Star Leader schools in New York State.

NYSERDA also took the opportunity to share their new benchmarking program Benchmarking: Re-Energizing New York State's Schools! and how districts can save time, money and resources during the next three months.

The highlight of the day was the ability of attendees to have one on one discussion with representatives from NYSED staff, NYSERDA staff, LIPA, NYPA, OGS and peers about questions and concerns all are facing in these economic times.
